Superb - with only a couple things amiss
By Anna Black
I could not put this book down. I'm always a bit worried when real history is presented in a fictionalized manner. But I learned so much reading this book. The story is about the main character of African Aminata, including her capture as a girl and lengthy march to the ocean, her horrific crossing of the sea, sale as a slave in America, move to New York, Nova Scotia, Freetown-Sierra Leone, and finally England. The storyline also includes the British Loyalists, American and African slave trade, and a denouement on British abolitionist movement.

That this author could pack so much into a book in such an entertaining and emotional way, is no small feat. I loved the author's writing, very poetic at times. And I was continually amazed at how a male author could write first person of a main female character so well. Aminata is a fresh original female character, one who I whole heartedly accept because she is strong, intelligent and wise.

Sometimes I had to suspend just a little too much disbelief at convenient plot points and despite several losses, Aminata's overall fortune was rather amazing and not at all comparable to the majority of African slaves. Another reviewer said this is more like Roots Lite and I have to agree. But honestly, I would like to learn about history without being re traumatized. I would recommend this book to anyone.

The Book of Negroes
By Danielle Kurek
The Book of Negroes is a fictional story of a woman's journey in the slave trade during the 18th and 19th centuries. Aminata Diallo was kidnapped from her village at the young age of 11 and was forced to walk for months bound in chains to the sea where brutalities and slave ships awaited. Lawrence Hill descriptively writes of Aminata's journey from her homeland in West Africa to the indigo farms of South Carolina in great detail, sensationally illustrating the horrors of the slave trade. In the midst of heartbreak and joy, we find Aminata Diallo slowly fighting her way to freedom and justice, albeit by way of an unexpected route.

My thoughts of this book are of such that I have decided I need to have a copy sitting on my own book shelf. It's not very often that I say I would read a book again, even if I have thought the book a really good read, but this book I will read again. It completely captivated me, and on more than one occasion I found myself holding my breath, whether in sorrow, joy or suspense.

What I most appreciated about The Book of Negroes, is that Hill did a lot of research in to what those held in slavery actually went through, including both their joys and sorrows, hopes and losses. At the end of the novel he shares the book's history, where his inspiration came from, and in addition a list of further readings on the subject of the slave trade.

With all the brutality of the slave trade depicted in this book, Hill wrote a heart-wrenchingly beautiful story. If you haven't already, you need to read this book!

Riveting, Brilliant, and Unforgettable
By Debra Purdy Kong
When eleven-year-old Aminata Diallo is abducted from her African village and forced onto a slave ship bound for America, her terror is unspeakable. Traumatized by the attacks on her parents, the brutality of white men and the filth of the ship, she can only think of survival, and survive she does. Aminata's ability to speak two languages and her midwifery skills save her life on the ship and later in South Carolina. Aminata's ultimate goal is to return to her village but there are insurmountable obstacles, heartbreak, and more cruelty than she would have believed possible.

The Book of Negroes is indeed a book about physical, mental, and emotional survival. It's also about the determination to preserve one's of identity despite the efforts of oppressors. Set in 1745 to the early 1800's, Aminata's story incorporates actual events and documents, including the American Revolution and the British military's Book of Negroes.

Lawrence Hill opens the story with Aminata as a free senior in London, England, who's reflecting on her life. Her resourcefulness, determination, courage, and intelligence make her a remarkable yet believable character. I could go on about Hill's exquisite use of language and voice, but you won't truly appreciate it until you read the book. Pick up a copy now. It's absolutely brilliant.
